When Devine Color founder Gretchen Schauffler decided to branch out and create Devine Color Floor, she had three conditions — it had to be beautiful, it had to be strong, and it needed to be environmentally responsible. We've worked hard to ensure that all our products meet the highest of indoor air quality standards. Being completely phthalate free, formaldehyde free and zero VOC, Devine Color Floors meet requirements set by both FloorScore® and LEED

But what does that mean?

Phthalates are a group of chemicals (also known as plasticizers) often used in PVC products. The problem is that products containing these chemicals tend to "leak" phthalates, into foods, liquids and the air. Phthalates can be breathed in from dust or fumes from vinyl products and can be a real threat to your air quality. By being phthalate free, Devine Color Floors harness all the strength and flexibility of PVC, with none of the harmful side-effects.

Formaldehyde is used to treat wood products — another reason why LVT flooring is a safer alternative to laminates and hardwoods. LVT products do not contain any wood, And Devine Color Floors are not made in the same factories where wood products are processed. Most reputable wood and laminate manufacturers will go to great lengths to ensure their products do not contain formaldehyde, but the best way to avoid ending up with formaldehyde in your flooring is to opt for a material such as LVT which does not contain wood at all, and therefore is never treated with or exposed to formaldehyde.

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, which are emitted from a large variety of solids and liquids including (but not limited to) paints, cleaning products, printers & copiers, glues & adhesives, and building supplies & furnishings. All of these products can release organic compounds while in use and, to a lesser extent, in storage. When it comes to reducing VOCs, there are typically two classifications: Low VOC and Zero VOC . All Devine Color Floor products contain Zero VOC.

FloorScore® is an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) certification developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) together with Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) to test and certify flooring products for compliance with indoor air quality emission requirements adopted in California. By carrying the FloorScore® seal, Devine Color Floors meet the stringent standards set forth by RFCI and have been independently certified by SCS to comply with the VOC emissions criteria of the California Section 01350 standard. Any product carrying this seal is a product that will contribute to good indoor air quality. The FloorScore® certification means healthier, cleaner air. And that means healthier humans.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects must satisfy prerequisites to achieve different levels of certifications spread across five rating systems: Building Design & Construction, Interior Design & Construction, Building Operations & Maintenence, Neighbourhood Development, and Homes. In conjunction with our FloorScore® certification, Devine Color Floors meet the requirements for LEED's Low-Emitting Materials (Flooring Systems) credit.

You can breathe easy knowing that Devine Color Floor is dedicated to achieving the highest indoor air quality requirements.
